About Appayon

Twenty-five years of Poynton evenings

We are a family-run Indian restaurant on Chester Road, open since 2001. Most of our guests live within a few miles; many have been eating with us since our first year.

Our kitchen

Cooked the long way round

Our chefs blend their own spice mixes rather than buying them ready made. Whole coriander, cumin and cardamom are dry roasted and ground through the week, which is why a passanda here tastes different from one anywhere else.

Meat for the tandoor is marinated overnight in yoghurt, ginger and garlic. Sauces begin each afternoon with onions cooked down slowly — no shortcuts, no reheated base gravy standing all evening.

Vegetarian and vegan cooking is not an afterthought either. Around a third of our menu is meat-free, and our kitchen is used to cooking for mixed tables where one guest is vegan, another is coeliac and a third simply wants a mild korma.

Our story

How we got here

  1. 2001

The doors open on Chester Road

Appayon begins as a small dining room serving Bengali and North Indian home cooking to a village that had never had a restaurant quite like it.

  2. 2005

    Takeaway and collection grow

Demand for food at home outgrows the counter, so the kitchen is rebuilt to run restaurant service and takeaway side by side without either suffering.

  3. 2010

A second generation in the dining room

Children who came for birthday meals start booking their own tables. Our tandoori and balti sections expand to keep up with what regulars ask for.

  4. Today

    Twenty-five years and counting

Twenty-five years on: dine-in, takeaway, delivery and collection from the same kitchen, with the same chefs, for the same neighbourhood.

Fresh ingredients

Spices ground in our own kitchen, vegetables and herbs delivered through the week, and sauces started from scratch every afternoon before service.

Traditional recipes

Regional Bengali and North Indian cooking our chefs learned at home — balti, passanda, biryani and tandoori dishes made the long way round.

A familiar welcome

Twenty-five years in Poynton means we know the regulars, the usual orders and the corner table you prefer on a Friday night.
